I voted early today in West Virginia. It was a touch screen and I know that there have been reports of switching of votes. I did not have any problems and neither did my husband. No vote switching and there is a paper trail inside the machine so you can view the vote you just made.
I felt such pride in voting for Barack today and I can barely imagine the thrill it will be to see him when he is inagurated on 1/21/08.
BTW, while I was voting the woman at the voting site was asked how the early voting was going and she told this man that as of today there were 638 early voters, which is the total of all voters in the primary election. I live in a small county in WV so this is very good news, I hope, for Barack.
"CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts plans to hold a press conference in Charleston Monday to discuss what he describes as "attempts by a film crew hired by the National Rifle Association to get miners to distort the record of Barack Obama on guns and the 2nd amendment."“Our members were approached on company property by this film crew and were peppered with questions regarding Sen. Obama’s positions on guns and the 2nd Amendment,” Cecil Roberts said in a press release issued Saturday. “We’re going to talk about that, because it marks a return of the gutter politics of the past by those of the say-anything, do-anything crowd who believe they can continue to use wedge issues to divide West Virginians. They think we’re not smart enough to figure out what they’re doing.”
Coal miners from the Blacksville #2 mine in northern West Virginia will accompany Roberts at the press conference in Charleston."
Here’s a speech I wish Barack would give:Ladies and Gentleman, I am not going to stand before you tonight to criticize John McCain or discuss what I feel is wrong with his campaign and his policies. I am hear before you tonight to tell you what I as your president want to do for this country to try to bring us out of this spiral of economy woes, our dismal hope of ever getting a break on gas prices, food prices, housing foreclosures and fear of own our futures, and to get us out of this incorrect war and into a correct fight against terrorism. This is what I want to do from this point forward in the campaign. I know that I will be criticized for not attacking or not playing hardball. But, I think the American people are fed up with this and so am I. I want to show the American people that I respect them and this country too much to squander away my respect with negative campaigning and words that are not doing anything to get my message of hope across to the American voters.I am not a hopeless idealist who believes that all of my dreams, desires, programs and policies I wish to accomplish through my presidency will absolutely come to pass. I am a realist who understands the difficult roads ahead and the battles Joe and I will have to engage in to get our goals and remedies to fix our problems for America discussed, legislated and hopefully accomplished. It all starts with the Oval Office and trickles down as we have, unfortunately, seen for the past 8 years. I am here today to talk about what I will do as the President to help you address all of the issues that matter to you the most. That is what the President’s job is.
Well, at least something like that. Mr. Obama has the eloquence and the passion to make this plea and I really wish he would. I know his campaign has been attacked for his failure to be more negative on McCain because of McCain’s unscrupulous attacks on Barack. His more negative ads may be helping him in the polls at the moment. But, in the end, I think Americans will be weary of this and McCain will be perceived as the candidate with the poor judgment for America.
Although Senator Obama has rebuked Pastor Wright's controversial comments, I believe there are going to be many white working class people who will continue to worry about this relationship and why Senator Obama remained in this church. Let me stress completely that these controversial comments from a minister have no sway on me whatsoever not to vote for Senator Obama. I am a committed supporter and will vote for him only in the presidential election.
However, what would be the best approach to convince those voters who are still undecided that despite Barack's continued membership in this church and despite the comments by his Minister that Barack's ideology is neither radical nor in any way remotely anti-Amercan. This is a fear that I believe exists for some white middle class voters even though the fear may not be merited.
All of us Barack supporters need to have convincing arguments to ease people's unnecessary fears and get them to see that Barack is the man who will take our country to greater success.
