Coming as a complete surprise to members of the Illinois Women's Delegation, Barack dropped in on some old pals today when he surprised them at their convention luncheon at the downtown Marriott in Denver. Only Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan was in on the secret.
As she was addressing the audience talking about the importance of this election she paused and said, "Let's welcome the next president of the United States, Barack Obama!"
The crowd, completely surprised, erupted in cheers. Friends and colleagues from as far back as Barack's first state senate campaign in 1996 embraced him upon his entrance.
He said, "Seeing all these familiar faces brings back such warm memories for me--some of you supported me during my losing congressional race in 2000 and most of you were there for my victory in 2004. It is so great to see all of you here!"
Cheers of "We love you Barack!" and "Do it for Illinois!" rang throughout the banquet hall as Barack left the room waving to his old buddies.
