This is the first chance I've had to join the community of bloggers, but better late than ever. I was too caught up in the door-to-door campaign to think of anything else.
Barack's new way of doing democracy may well be the most important thing that has ever happened in this country, and it may take a while for Republicans and Libertarians to join in. Old habits die hard, right? But we must make the effort to reach out to them, to show them that they, too, have a part to play in this, and their voices will be heard.
Change begins with us, not with our President. And it starts in our own neighborhoods. So, may I make a suggestion to help us get the ball rolling? Why don't we have a little get-together at our home and invite some people over to watch a ball game or whatever we can do together 'on the cheap?' No need to talk politics at all. The primary objective is to get to know each other, so let's make a point of inviting people we don't know instead of those whom we already know. We need to shift our focus from 'get out the vote' to 'get together', and this is an easy way to get started. No matter where we are, no matter who we are, we can always find common ground. And we can have a lot of fun, too!
This campaign has taught me so much! I learned that every person I meet is a special gift from God and that my life has been blessed all the more for having met that person. Also, I learned that the us-versus-them kind of thinking is a stupid waste of time. Our lives are so much richer when we change to 'we-and-us.'
So...how 'bout it? A whole new deal can get started RIGHT NOW!
