My wife and I volunteered our time in Georgetown, S.C. this past weekend with the Barack Obama campaign. When people say the enthusiasm was electric they were not exaggerating. The area was actually what CNN projected to be Clinton territory, and we had overwhelming support and enthusiasm for Obama.
I canvassed in one area with a staff member in a very poor neighborhood with two hours left before the polls closed. As we went to houses people realized they did not have much time and many rushed for the polls. One guy I talked to startled when I told him he only had about an hour and a half left to vote. He was holding a beer when I talked to him and when he tore out of his driveway his beer was still in hand.
Another older lady had sent her son in her place because her car was broke down and had no means to get to the booth. We were delighted to be able to drive her with half an hour left and she glowed as she came out. These were Obama supporters. The enthusiasm was not just among the volunteers and staff; you could feel it in the communities who proudly talked about their support for the man who would best represent their interests.
