I'm really beginning to be concerned about what is happening in the Persian Gulf. I afraid this information isn't getting enough news coverage. The Olympics and Russian/Georgia War are taking precedence.
"The United States had sent three new American flotillas to the Persion Gulf, raising the number of United States strike forces in the Middle East to 5. The United States, France, Britain, and Canada are planning a naval blockade to deny Iran imports of refined oil products."http://www.nowpublic.com/world/three-major-us-naval-strike-forces-due-week-persian-gulf
I'm reading "the Audacity of Hope" right now. I look forward to this new book!

I may be over-reacting to this news but I wonder why Operation Brimstone hasn't receive more coverage in the US press. Apparently two of the US aircraft carries that participated in Operation Brimstone are headed to the Gulf.
"Operation Brimstone ended only one week ago. This was the joint US/UK/French naval war games in the Atlantic Ocean preparing for a naval blockade of Iran and the likely resulting war in the Persian Gulf area. The massive war games included a US Navy supercarrier battle group, an US Navy expeditionary carrier battle group, a Royal Navy carrier battle group, a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine plus a large number of US Navy cruisers, destroyers and frigates playing the "enemy force"." - Stirling

This news is disturbing. I'm concerned about what plan the Bush administration has in regard to the Middle East. I worry it is in response to Iran's nuclear power program or the war in Iraq. I want to see peace not war in the Middle East.

I was outraged when I found out the other day that the Department of Veterans Affairs has forbidden voter registration drives in its hospitals, rehab centers and other facilities. This ban hurts thousands of young veterans who have been injured while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We should be helping our veterans register and vote, not making it more difficult.
I wrote Senator Obama on this issue:
Dear Senator Obama,
As a voter, I strongly disagree with the Department of Veterans Affairs ban on voter registration drives in V.A. hospitals. Please co-sponsor the Veterans Voting Support act to protect the voting rights of our armed forces, and work to make sure this bill comes to a quick vote.
This was his response: see Voting Asssistance for VA patients VHA Directive 2008-025

I just used the We Campaign's simple letter to the editor writing tool to tell my local paper about the urgent need to solve the climate crisis. It's easy, and I think you should write one, too:

Last week, the U.S. Congress left Washington without addressing the energy crisis. They didn't deal with gas prices and they didn't move on solutions to climate change. One of our most powerful tools in the movement to solve the climate crisis is the letter to the editor. Please take a moment to write a letter to the editor of your local paper about this urgent issue:
Remember to include information on Barack Obama's energy plan!
Will you write your Representative's office today and ask for a swift passage of the Veteran Voting Support Act?

While this is good news I want more details. I'm also concerned about any agreement crafted by the current Bush administration. As far as I'm concerned Barack Obama's stance on this issue was impetus for this happening.

I wrote BaracK Obama about Medicare reform. This was his response to me.
It's unfortunate that this situation exists. Especially our troops abroad should be able to have their votes tallied.
"Millions of Americans abroad, including about 175,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, face chronic timing and technological problems if they try to vote in this fall's presidential election."

Late yesterday, the House and Senate successfully overrode the President's veto of legislation (HR 6331) making critical reforms and improvements to the Medicare program for beneficiaries living with mental illness. The vote in the House was 383-41 and the vote in the Senate was 70-26.
NAMI is extremely grateful for the efforts of advocates all across the country that e-mailed, wrote and called their Senators and House members. Advocacy made a tremendous difference! Please take the final step of thanking members of Congress that supported the legislation and voted to override the President's veto.

I'm concerned that there needs to be a greater reduction of US troop in Iraq than is currently being considered. It is my understanding that this is what the people of Iraq also desire. I don't think the USA can afford to be "policemen" to the world.
"...military leaders acknowledged that the force in Iraq when the buildup ended would be larger than before it began. And they suggested that the post-buildup force would total about 142,000."

I just finished reading the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive. Further research on Presidential directives led me here.

The news coming out lately about Iran is scary. We need tough diplomacy--not another war.I just signed this petition urging Congress to push for diplomacy and demand that President Bush get Congressional authorization before going to war.
