I'm looking forward to these debates! There will be three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate this fall. The first presidential debate is set for Sept. 26 in Oxford, Miss. The others are scheduled for Oct. 7 and Oct. 15, with the vice presidential debate set for Oct. 2.

Three major US naval strike forces due this week in Persian Gulf

I'm really beginning to be concerned about what is happening in the Persian Gulf. I afraid this information isn't getting enough news coverage. The Olympics and Russian/Georgia War are taking precedence.

"The United States had sent three new American flotillas to the Persion Gulf, raising the number of United States strike forces in the Middle East to 5. The United States, France, Britain, and Canada are planning a naval blockade to deny Iran imports of refined oil products."

Operation Brimstone

I may be over-reacting to this news but I wonder why Operation Brimstone hasn't receive more coverage in the US press. Apparently two of the US aircraft carries that participated in Operation Brimstone are headed to the Gulf.

"Operation Brimstone ended only one week ago. This was the joint US/UK/French naval war games in the Atlantic Ocean preparing for a naval blockade of Iran and the likely resulting war in the Persian Gulf area. The massive war games included a US Navy supercarrier battle group, an US Navy expeditionary carrier battle group, a Royal Navy carrier battle group, a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine plus a large number of US Navy cruisers, destroyers and frigates playing the "enemy force"." - Stirling

This news is disturbing. I'm concerned about what plan the Bush administration has in regard to the Middle East. I worry it is in response to Iran's nuclear power program or the war in Iraq. I want to see peace not war in the Middle East.

Senator Barack Obama's response to Voting Assistance for VA patients

I was outraged when I found out the other day that the Department of Veterans Affairs has forbidden voter registration drives in its hospitals, rehab centers and other facilities. This ban hurts thousands of young veterans who have been injured while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We should be helping our veterans register and vote, not making it more difficult.

I wrote Senator Obama on this issue:

Dear Senator Obama,

As a voter, I strongly disagree with the Department of Veterans Affairs ban on voter registration drives in V.A. hospitals. Please co-sponsor the Veterans Voting Support act to protect the voting rights of our armed forces, and work to make sure this bill comes to a quick vote.

Platform Meeting in Champaign-Urbana IL

We attended a platform meeting and found it to be an amazing two hour process. There were five areas discussed: Environment, Economy, Education, Foreign Policy (and the Iraq War), and Restoring Democracy. We had 30 people in attendance. We first introduced ourselves. Next we brainstormed issues. We next combined issues together and decided (by vote) which issues were the most important issues to be discussed. Finally we broke into small groups to discuss the five top issues. It was a challenging and inspirational process. My husband and I left feeling we had real input into a democtatic process.

Victory on Medicare! National Alliance on Mental Illiness

Late yesterday, the House and Senate successfully overrode the President's veto of legislation (HR 6331) making critical reforms and improvements to the Medicare program for beneficiaries living with mental illness. The vote in the House was 383-41 and the vote in the Senate was 70-26.

NAMI is extremely grateful for the efforts of advocates all across the country that e-mailed, wrote and called their Senators and House members. Advocacy made a tremendous difference! Please take the final step of thanking members of Congress that supported the legislation and voted to override the President's veto.

Military surge in Iraq ends; 150,000 troops remain

I'm concerned that there needs to be a greater reduction of US troop in Iraq than is currently being considered. It is my understanding that this is what the people of Iraq also desire. I don't think the USA can afford to be "policemen" to the world.
