President Obama, Please Get FISA Right
There's been talk of how Senator Obama should vote in favor of retroactive telecom immunity as part of a compromise to get needed portions of the FISA bill passed. In general I'm in favor of compromise, and I think Obama's ability to perceive nuance and reach out to both sides of the political spectrum has been one of his most admirable and defining characteristics as a politician. However I don't think the FISA bill as it exists now, with provisions to legalize Bush's warrantless wiretapping program and grant retroactive immunity to telecoms, is a compromise so much as a concession to right-wing fear mongering.
The democrats have a majority in Congress. They have that majority because we gave it to them. We elected them to stand up to the ridiculous policies of the Bush administration and say "No!" Instead, they want to give away our constitutional rights. For what -- to appear patriotic? I think we need protection from our own government more than we need protection from the terrorists. As a famous statesman who shares my first name once said, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." If you think it's acceptable for Senator Obama, or any Congressman, to legislate away our 4th amendment rights, then you've lost track of what liberty is all about.
