Hello,
My name is Alexis Hill and I am junior art major at St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary's City, MD. Throughout this primary season, I have noticed a new movement to help unite this country led by the man who should be the next President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. I support him because he is enthusiastic and inspirational to a lot of Americans including young voters of my generation. I became a supporter of him after he won Iowa back in January and I was so inspired by his speech, in which he used the words 'hope' and 'change'. My eyes are glued to the television now every time he speaks. I joined his website in mid-February and I have ever since been interested in what is going on. I read the blogs everyday because it is very interested to see what people are saying about them.
Another reason why I support him is because his opposition of the war in Iraq from the very beginning. He is the only candidate in this race who has been opposed to it from the start and he knew back then that it would lead to chaos for this country. He was right. Every time I hear something on the news about an American soldier losing his/her life, I feel a sense of anger and sadness. Sadness for their families and anger for the disastrous administration. I remember one spring day in 2003, I was in D.C. and I saw protestors walking on the sidewalks with signs saying things like, "War is not the answer" and "This is not right for out country". At that time, I knew our country would start dividing up between anti and pro war. In the days after 9/11, our country was like one nation under God. Everyone around the world was praying for us. Now it feels like we are so divided now. One of my favorite quotes that Obama said in his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention was "There is a not a liberal America and a conservative America. There is the United States of America." I did not remember watching his speech at the time, but I watched on youtube weeks ago and I was amazed at this guy. It shows that he really loves this country. He is also the only candidate who says "President of the United States of America." That just bring so much happiness to mine and other Americans to their hearts. I smile every time he says it too. I believe that he will end this war, which he has clearly reminded us that it is not going to be easy, and get America back on its feet again.
During my spring break, I decided to go buy his book The Audacity of Hope, which I am currently reading right now. I enjoy reading this book because it is a source of inspiration and encouragement to me. He talks about how we need a new breed of politics in Washington and how it is time to look to the future and not the past. I like the way he talks important historical figures and events from the past. I grew up in the 90s and I do not remember much about politics or what was going on. I first became interested in politics during the 2004 election. I did a lot of canvassing and phone calling in my hometown of Mitchellville, MD. I figured since I could not vote, I would help out. I was so sad when we lost. I had this bad feeling inside that things were about to get worse for America and I was right. Look where we are now. The economy is bad, millions of soldiers have lost their lives or wounded badly, and now there is a housing crisis. Every time I feel bad or sad about something I hear in the news, I just get out Obama's book and read. I feel a lot better after reading because it makes me think about what we could do as Americans to turn this country around.
During the 2006 mid-term elections, I became actively involved in St. Mary's County with our College of Democrats at my school. We did phone calling and canvassing. Our hard efforts paid off on election night. It was the best night ever. Everyone was jumping up and down in their seats. The democrats had taken control of both the house and senate. We could not believe our eyes. I was too excited to sleep that night. I remember Obama was on that night talking about his reaction to the results. I never imagined that he would be running for president now. That night, Americans said "Enough is enough!" I think back then, people were ready for change!
So far, I have donated a total of $40.00 to this campaign. I hope and pray that I will be chosen to have dinner with him because I really want to meet this man. I know he is a great speaker and he is talking like a president too. When I watched his speech on race, it almost made me cry. Those words were so inspirational more than anything because he clearly pointed that a lot of Americans who have experience racism cannot forget it, but as Americans, white, black, latino, asian, etc., we can unite this country together as one not divided. I believed it too. I also enjoyed his Iraq War speech too. He reminded us of all the troubles this country has been in since this war started 5 years ago. He still clearly states that he was against it from the start. In both of these extraordinary speeches, he was talking like a president to me.
In conclusion, I hope and pray that Americans, like myself, will go out and make sure that Barack Obama will be the next President of the United States of America because he is the man who will lead us into the future. That is what I believe this campaign and election is all about, the future. My future will be in the hands of whoever becomes president. I have one more year as an undergrad and then I graduate. I want to go to graduate school and get a job in the web industry. This has been a long primary season, but a great one because of Obama! I cannot believe there are so many people who love this man. He believes in a lot of things, including family and faith. I believe in both of those. My family is very close and our faith is important too. I pray almost everyday for my family, myself, our country, our troops, and of course Barack Obama himself. Earlier this month, I sent a message to his wife, Michelle telling her how inspirational her husband is to me and other Americans. I always put my faith in God hands. I hope everyone enjoys reading this. Since I have been part of this community, I have noticed how a lot of people share their own stories. Thank you for letting me share my story. God bless America and Barack Obama! YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!
