Hello Illinoisans! We’d like to reflect on the efforts of some of our busiest volunteers! Bradley University students have been hard at work, balancing their school work and volunteering for Senator Obama! Their political activism has certainly paid off!!! From Sister City trips to phone banking, they’ve reached out to Iowans and made a huge difference!! One of the students at Bradley wrote in to tell us about what they’ve been doing this Fall Semester!
As the semester winds down at Bradley and finals start to pick up, BU Student for Barack takes a bit of a break to study - but the multiple trips we took to Iowa, seemingly countless phone banks, and long hours of data entry and organizing are still fresh in our minds. The hard work has paid off as Obama seems to do better and better by the day. Being ranked by Princeton Review as the Third Least Political Campus in the U.S., Bradley has been just the opposite this Fall of '07. Roughly eight canvassing trips to Iowa, nine phone banks, and thousands of calls later, Bradley and the Obama campaign has something to be proud of - this kind of political organizing has never been this prominent on our campus until now. As they say, "if it plays in Peoria, it will play anywhere" - Well Obama's been a hit here, so if the motto plays out, we're sittin’ pretty for the rest of the country. Obama '08!
Illinois – we’ve got just a few weeks left until the Iowa caucuses – it’s time to reach out more than ever before! Please sign up to volunteer for Senator Obama!!!!
Join us in Chicago for a night of phonebanking, refreshments, and fun with special guests, State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and State Comptroller Dan Hynes:
Next week, supporters throughout Chicago are coming to the Volunteer Headquarters to spend an evening making calls and contacting voters in early caucus and primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina.
Our momentum is building in these states and around the country, and with the first caucuses and primaries only three weeks away, it's crucial that voters hear about our movement for change.
Join State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, and State Comptroller Dan Hynes and help build our grassroots network across the country:

The Iowa caucuses are approaching quickly! The success of this campaign has been fueled by the dedication of our loyal and hardworking volunteers! Now, more than ever, we need volunteers to phone bank or take a trip to Iowa to canvass for Barack!
The road to the White House starts here – let’s make sure Senator Obama’s message reaches voters across America!!! One of our volunteers, Brian, wrote in to tell us why he has spent so much time working for Senator Obama. We hope this story will help inspire more Illinoisans to get involved this month!
Barack Obama has inspired me to get involved and try to mobilize other supporters. I have gone on bus trips to canvass in Iowa and have participated in phone banks locally. I have met many wonderful people throughout my volunteer efforts as well. I feel empowered and will feel a great sense of pride when Barack Obama is elected President. I will know I played my small part in making that happen.I wanted to get involved with Senator Obama's presidential campaign, but I didn't realize the impact it would have on my life as a whole. Because of my association with the campaign, I have decided to get involved locally as well. I am running for McLean County Circuit Clerk. I will be able to use the skills I learned as a volunteer for Obama to help in my own campaign.I am very excited to be helping out with the campaign and look forward to making calls and spending time in Iowa for the caucus!

One of our supporters wrote in to tell us about a couple of her phone calls! She had one conversation with an undecided college student – our volunteer talked about Senator Obama’s experience as a Professor of constitutional law and his time as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago. By the end of the call, she had convinced another voter to support Senator Obama!!

Across the country, Students For Barack Obama (SFBO) have worked hard to get Senator Obama elected! There are chapters of SFBO on campuses all over Illinois. These groups of students have organized groups of students at their school to support Barack Obama and get involved with the campaign! They’ve phone banked, travelled to Iowa to canvass, raised funds through selling chum, and organized Dorm Storms!
Students are a critical component of this campaign! Recently, the University of Illinois group sent us some pictures of one of their Dorm Storms! Dorm Storms are organizing events where groups of SFBO students go around their campuses and register other students to vote! The Dorm Storm event at Allen Hall at the University of Illinois was very successful! The group registered approximately 70 people in the course of 2.5 hours that day! We’ve posted a couple pictures of these great volunteers and students who are now signed up to vote!
If you want to get involved, please sign up for the last University of Illinois Sister City trip to Iowa on December 1st!

Hey Illinoisans! Sister City trips are one of the best ways for Illinoisans to get involved with Senator Obama's campaign! On November 3rd, hundreds of Illinoisans took the trip to Iowa to talk to voters and tell them why they should support Senator Obama! One of our volunteers sent in some pictures from her trip!
This group canvassed at least three different small towns over a number of hours on Saturday, November 3rd! Many volunteers were from the northwest suburbs of Chicago!
The Sister City trips are a great way to talk to voters, meet other volunteers, and help Senator Obama! Every week the campaign has trips departing from various locations in Illinois. Sign up and join other Obama supporters! With less than 60 days until the big caucus day, your effort can make all the difference for Senator Obama!
We received this story from one of our Illinois volunteers from the November 3rd canvass in Iowa! Our volunteer, Grace, has been on multiple Sister City trips to Iowa and joined us again last weekend to mobilize Iowa voters to get to their caucuses and support Senator Obama. Here’s Grace’s story:
This past weekend my mother, Norma Giorgio, and I took to the streets of Bettendorf to canvass for Barack Obama! She blew me away as she pulled flyers from her bag and engaged Iowans with her sweet voice and fervent support for our senator and presidential hopeful Barack Obama. “Our democracy is going down the tubes,” she announced at each door, “and I believe only Barack Obama can help us out.”I was amazed at her ability to talk with people from all stages of life! Of the fourteen people we spoke with, we got three definite supporters for the caucus—in no small part because of my mom.Together we walked over three hours without a break, since the suburb lacked any public space. By the afternoon’s end, we found a lone bench perched on a cement platform in the middle of nowhere. I pulled it to the curb and we sat on it to relieve our tired feet, laughing as we waited for our ride. It was a beautiful day, one we plan on repeating very soon! A real trooper, my mother is!

The road to the Democratic nomination runs through Iowa, and the best way you can help Barack is to help him win the Iowa caucuses. This weekend was the biggest effort from Illinois volunteers travelling to Iowa!
The campaign had multiple trips departing from all over Illinois on Saturday, November 3rd to take part in the “Canvass for Change!” Hundreds of Illinoisans participated in this Sister City trip!!
The campaign had many first-time volunteers and some seasoned veterans who showed up to help out with the canvass in Iowa. One of the Illinois volunteers from Saturday wrote to tell us about their favorite experience on the canvass:
We were walking down the streets of Iowa City, on our way to the next door, when a car drove past us… stopped in the middle of the street… dropped into reverse… rolled down her front window & excitedly said “Hey, are you for Obama?” We said yes; she said “Oh great! Hey, can I have a supporter card? I want to support him. And do you know if I could get a yard sign too?”
The November 3rd trip is definitely NOT the last trip to Iowa from Illinois! We’re making a massive effort to contact and mobilize every potential Iowa supporter before the caucus! You have a major impact on this election and the direction of our country by helping us so please continue to sign up for trips to Iowa!
This week is a great week to get involved in Illinois! There are many phone banking events and this weekend, on November 3rd, the campaign is hosting the largest trip to Iowa yet! If you have never taken a Sister City trip, please join us this weekend and help get our candidate elected!!! Sign up below!
Last night, many volunteers were able to get some phone banking in before watching the big Democratic debate! One of our coordinators wrote in about phone banking at ISU.
From Magen, Illinois SFBO Coordinator: Last night we had a successful Dial for Change in Normal before the Democratic debate even though our group was a little dispersed. With many of our usual callers at the ISU College Democrats meeting we still had 8 people present and made 386 calls we cut our calls short to go tune into the Democratic Presidential Debate. We were especially lucky to have Brian, a graduate of Downstate Camp Obama with us. Brian was so inspired by his time at Camp Obama he has decided to run for county office, although he still finds time to make phone calls on behalf of his favorite presidential candidate!

We’re nearing the end of October, which means the November 3rd “walk for change” canvass is approaching! The campaign needs volunteers to sign up for Iowa trips! The Illinois to Iowa trips are meant to mobilize the grassroots network and get Iowa voters signed up for their state caucus to support Senator Obama! The campaign hopes to make November 3rd the biggest canvass yet!
Last weekend, one group of Illinois volunteers went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The trip coordinator wrote in to tell us about his experience and share photos of the group!
From the trip coordinators Duane Hill and Connie Bloom: On Saturday at 6am, 17 Obama Volunteers organized by Lakeview Neighbors for Obama and Young Chicago Lakefront left from Ann Sather's Restaurant, sweet rolls in hand, heading to the Linn County (Cedar Rapids) Iowa Obama Office. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by a volunteer in Cedar Rapids before we were able to exit our cars. We headed into a confident and energetic office and were quickly trained on the ins-and-outs of Iowa canvassing. We went through our walking packets and hit the streets warmed by the unseasonably warm weather and friendly Iowans that we met. I sent a thank you out to our group after we returned and most of the group thanked me in turn. Who thought that knocking on doors, with sore feet, would be a fun and rewarding experience?

Monday night some busy Obama volunteers were hard at work in Tazewell County Headquarters in Pekin, IL! They worked from around 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
One of our volunteers wrote in and briefly told us about her experience:
This small but committed group made 490 calls to Des Moines Iowa. I brought snacks, someone brought us pizza. We had people from early twenties to seniors calling! My best call was with a nurse. She and her husband, who also is a nurse are definitely interested in healthcare and leaning toward Hillary and Obama. She says it is sad that they have to treat people with colds in the ER due to lack of insurance!

A Day in Des Moines Saturday, October 13th, I traveled from Illinois 170 miles to Des Moines, Iowa. There were 4 of us who made the journey, through the heavy traffic, off and on rain, and the speed demons, so we could learn more ways to get women involved in the caucus process. Why? Because the women of Iowa make up the largest group of caucus attendees and are also the largest voting population in Presidential races since 1964. We want our voices heard! As the morning began we were introduced to the COO of the Obama campaign, a woman who had formerly worked in the Clinton Administration. We then met some of the other dynamic women who are involved in the campaign such as Gail, Gillian, and on and on. Then out of nowhere came the voice of Barack Obama!
Women for Obama training in Des Moins: The women pose with Senator Obama!
He took the time to answer questions and take a group picture. He shook hands and greeted many participants with a smile and a warm heartfelt "Thank you".My friend, Karen and I were actually returning into the hallway from a quick restroom break when we were met by the Secret Service. They kindly asked us to move to the right side of the hall due to the Senator getting ready to walk through. We complied with the directive and quickly moved aside. Barack recognized us as the 2 women from Illinois. (He had seen before at other events we volunteered to work. I spoke out at these other events during picture time mentioning to Barack that Karen and I were his Illinois contingency in Iowa.) He stopped his forward motion, pulled to his left, and came directly over to us to shake our hands and personally thank us for driving all the way from Illinois so that we could participate, learn and help drive this campaign forward from the side of dedicated volunteers. I told him that I would do anything to ensure his being elected! He thanked me again, smiled, shook my hand, and quietly walked off to his next obligation. He is sincere. He is the right candidate to move this country forward. He is the man to bring America back together as a united nation. He is intelligent, eloquent, inspiring, and ready to be our next President.
