I would like to thank the guests that showed up at our humble home last night, bringing gifts, food, plum wine and plum grappa...YUM! Stephanie Shellabarger, Lois and Steve Webster, Nicola Yarbrough, Joan Rosati , Daniel Herman who rushed home from work and my son Sean O'Brien who even managed to do his homework. We had a blast and the speech was amazing. Put it simply...I love my president and everything he is willing and does stand for. Namely we the people. On facebook, Traci Kelly of Equal Time Radio posted a Link about Rep Joe Wilson who heckled President Obama:

Were we all not shocked by that? President Obama is always such a cool cucumber that is it very surprising when people are rude and even obnoxious about him. It is such a strange thing. My husband who is very quiet and humble himself said about Wilson "how do we fire that guy?" we need to get him out. At the time it felt like what he was doing was not only rude but illegal...

We sat through many speech of President Bush and he was not heckled. Democrats I believe as a rule are more polite.

The link that Traci submitted on Facebook points out that Rep Joe Wilson was paid thousands and thousands of dollars by the insurance industry as well as others. It is simply sickening. We see him as a "purchased" disrupter. Bought and paid for by the industries and not the people he is elected to help and protect. It makes us sick, except we cannot get sick because we cannot afford our health insurance premiums as a small contractor, self-employed.

Go Barack!

We know some progressives are upset because we will not have single payor option and immediately...but we recognize we want evolution and not revolution and President Obama is making headway, especially we hope into the hearts of middle America who have been the victims of fear mongering by people like Representative Joe Wilson.

Keeping Americans well and healthy should be considered a patriotic duty. A healthy and well America is a strong America. Please spread the word about Joe Wilson.

Is Living In A Motel In Your Future?

This past weekend my son went to the Washington State Fantasy Renaissance Faire and had a great time playing a game called "boffering." Boffering is essentially a renaissance fantasy game where people make or buy foam covered weapons and engage in battle and it is great fun. Due to the fact our family at this time does not have health insurance we have to be conscious of getting hurt or ill so we always caution him to be careful. We do have some savings for medical bills but it is not nearly enough. Later in the week he was invited to a local boffering group at Lake Wapato Park in Tacoma. We met some great kids and adults, all polite and all interested in renaissance history and weapons.

As a parent I like boffering because it is a computer game come to life but the kids and adults get alot of exercise. At this game we met a couple of young men that helped my son play and even game him the foam weapons to use. Later as dusk fell we offered them a ride home as they invited my son to come to a practice later in the week so he could improve his skills. One of the young men was walking to the Econo-Lodge on South Tacoma Way. His dad was laid off from his job, and his mom who has lupus has breast cancer. Due to the fact she had lupus and was laid off from her job earlier in the year she could not get health insurance for a pre-existing condition. Her boss, she says cried when she laid her off. Due to the recession she was laid off as the newest employee but hopes to be hired back when one of the older employees retires.

She is receiving treatment for breast cancer and paying out of pocket. The minimal care they received last year cost the family $58 thousand dollars, they had a rambler in a nice neighborhood. Her husband who is a concrete contractor until fairly recently could make about $4000.00 a week during the busy season.

Due to the economic recession and layoffs they could not pay for the medical treatment and keep their home, so they lost their home. They then were living in a 5th wheel on a friend's property but were kicked out when the City of Tacoma said this was a code violation. They have lived on the street at times, bouncing between friends but do not have family to help them. Currently they live in a motel and today dad went to a job for $40.00 for the whole day. Their son who was so helpful to my son was laid off from his job so they are living on his unemployment and basically waiting for a contract with Bruce Titus to start so they can get back into an apartment. They have lost everything and daily life is very hard.

This young man's mom can only work for a few hours at a time because she is so ill. Had they had health insurance they would have had enough savings to pay the mortgage and keep a roof over their heads. They have contacted every social service agency locally for help but the words are the same...we have waiting list...we cannot help you. This young man's mom does not want to be on the drugs provided by DSHS doctors, Oxycotin and other morphine drugs that make it more difficult for her to function so she pays $45.00 to see a doctor up near Seattle who treats her with less invasive drugs. Sometimes she is in terrible pain but does not want to take narcotics and get addicted as she is a person who does not even drink alcohol.

Many days there is no food in the house and they have to take a bus to a food bank. The young man is still kind and upbeat and praying his mother will get well and his dad will get back to work. Every working American who does not have health insurance could be in the same boat, and even those Americans who do have health insurance. We are all one illness away from bankruptcy and ruin and living in a motel not knowing what the next day would bring. We know as a family if we get sick we will have to get well or basically kill ourselves in order to leave something for the care of our son. As we seek additional employment there are no positions available where health care is available. We are in favor of a single payor system and this is one of the main reasons we support President Obama.

This is a true story and I spoke and met the woman and her family today. They are hardworking Americans who have lost everything due to medical bills and no ability to get health insurance.

This letter was drafted by student (and parent) volunteers, some of whom are military families and have lived in areas where there is still ongoing racial tension. Please pass on.

Dear Fellow Americans:

The tone and content of the McCain – Palin Campaign and seriously deteriorated to a level that we believe is dangerous and illegal because it is causing hatred and animosity to be increased so that Americans are committing hate crimes and exhibiting behavior that could lead to violence. We are appalled and outraged at their lack of responsible behavior.

This must be stopped..

Senator McCain and Governor Palin as representatives of our government and America have a responsibility to maintain civil peace and order and to not incite violence with statements that are misleading and derogatory especially when we are at war; putting fellow Americans lives at risk.

We urge you to contact your local representative and ask that action be taken.

If you witness or see a hate crime, please contact local law enforcement, as well as report it to the FBI. Link below:

We have laws and protections for all Americans regardless of sex, race, creed, sexual orientation and religion. We cannot allow fellow Americans to violate these laws leading to violence and hate crimes.

Thank you to the organizers of the Honesty Demonstration in Seattle Westlake Park! Andrew Caldwell gave away awesome buttons and we believe Fox News Channel 13 picked up the story...it probably will be distorted! We met photographers, young and old and traffic in Seattle was honking and waving like crazy. Everyone is volunteering to get out the vote! Thank you all for your hard work and dedication. All Obama supporters, friends and family everywhere you are simply awesome!

Thank you to Kilkenny Family For Having Courage!

Hi all:I decided to give Anne Kilkenny a call this morning. We have a great affection for Alaska andthink it took great courage for she and her family's part to report what she did...knowing she and her family could suffer harrassment and vindictive behavior. I spoke to her husband Patrick and they are Irish Catholic like my family here in the Northwest and lovers of the outdoors and came from people who hunt and fish. Pat said he spent some time working at the Ballard Locks and lived on Queen Anne Hill. If I understood him correctly he moved to Alaska in 1965. Pat said that Palin enjoys hunting like "shooting wolves out of planes." I told him that pretty much no one hunts in my family anymore; we have no need to and we would never support something like that.This type of thing horrifies me. We love Alaska and its ruggedness. My great grandmother went to Alaska to chase down her husband who had left in the Alaskan Gold Rush...I have family pictures of a very ticked off finely dressed Victorian Lady, looking for her husband and in tow two daughters, one of whom was my dear grandmother Katie, a baby on a dog sled. In those days it was very tough to be a woman alone and my great grandmother ended up divorcing her husband who had abandoned her and went into business for herself. So I admire truly maverick women and we know how tough it can be for women and why we have fought so hard for the vote and choice. I told Pat that I frankly was absolutely shocked that Palin was picked as a running mate because while I support her down-to-earthiness in being able to do things in the outdoors - - - we are a family like many NW families that spent a lot of time in REI...as immigrants last century our family strove very hard to be educated and global in our thinking. I am extremely impressed that Senator Barack Obama and his wife came out of lower and middle class families and sought their education at an Ivy League School and then went into community service and politics to help America and not their own pocket. Senator Barack Obama "chose" to be a global person and not for his own gain but to help us.Mr. Kilkenny did not reveal his political affiliation...nor did I ask him. I was just calling his family to say "thank you" but it is obvious his concern is real and he said his family really questions whether a woman like this can truly be the right person to speak to heads of states as she lacks the sophistication and wherewithall to understand more complicated issues and the lack of concern for ethics is a serious impediment to represent this country. Thank you Kilkenny family...it is sad when we fear our fellow Americans for simply telling the truth.

It's The Moosehead!

((Incredibly: Recent converstation with some young people (men) who Republicans are voting for McCain. All of them went to private schools...are going to private colleges, and think "big government is bad," "You must earn what you have,"...believe in the bootstraps (even if they come from REI)---none of them planned to enlist and serve in the military and when I asked them why not?---they looked stunned and horrified.."it is not my career choice.")(I did not know War could be a "career choice" In this light:Hi all: I just have to share some humor about the latest with McCain's choice of a running mate.My housemate has relatives in Alaska; he has been getting emails that sort of go like this: "Is McCain on Crack?" He has either completely lost it or has made one of the bravest moves in history.We just keep thinking that if McCain takes office and God forbid has a heart attack or something the new leader of the free world will look good with hunting gear, a rifle and a moosehead in the back of the White House.Seriously:Governor Palin was the mayor of a town of 9000 people...before being in her office for 18 months. Now all of you think of a town the size of Grangeville....Alaska is potentially the richest state in the union because of oil and natural resources. There has been much corruption in Alaska with federal dollars being channeled in the wrong direction or hijacked. Ms. Palin appears to the people to be a person who wants to clean things up and "change" things but working on behalf of Republicans is truly like having the fox guard the chicken coop. I hope our best democratic minds and attorneys will put a very large scope on these issues. I know there are people in Seattle who know what I am talking about...I do not think we can underestimate this move by McCain and the Republican Party. Yes we may hope he was having a brain fart...but I do not think so. In America because of our deplorable anti-intellectual attitudes and sexism we have not been able to overcome many barriers related to gender. One of the reasons I personally did not think a Hillary Clinton (although I admire her greatly) could win the presidency in this election is because frankly she is too smart, New Yorker and we do not have an American model that accepts strong aggressive women as a rule in leadership positions, especially the "citified folks. Ms. Palin is the perfect foil, and those "family values" are going to be trotted out with the moosehead, the gun rack, and that good ole six pack of bud beer. Don't underestimate the marketing power of "the little lady." How does that expression go? God made woman, and Rockafeller and his gang of thieves made "ladies." Give a little lady a gun rack, a moosehead and a six pack of bud and she is in the oval office my friends. There are many good Republican people who do not know what has been going on behind the scenes. We are less than one 100 years away from being pretty rural and our country is made up of many small towns where many Americans identify with self-determination, self-reliance, and self-sufficiency. I just drove down the coast of Oregon to California, stopping and talking to people and it was amazing. (Kudos to the Oregonians for conserving the Coastline and keeping it clean and beautiful, I wish Washington State could bring Cody out of storage and remind Washingtonians to do a better job in the litter department--Yes I could move to Oregon but I would rather visit and keep the it as green as we used to be.)Ms. Palin will represent these values well. Don't underestimate her ability to remind us of an younger, fresher America and the open frontier...many Americans simply do not understand that with a huge population and a global economy; government is not evil but simply necessary for infrastructure. They forget we are the government, moreover when Federal dollars are involved..guess what...it is up to the people involved to provide the service as promised. These individuals are not "government' they are private usually corporate enterprises...follow the money to find the foe.Republicans have had a very long history of picking style over substance and winning, setting up operations in Alaska is pretty damned smart.
