In the long sixty-year tortured history of the Palestinian expulsion from their lands, Congress has maintained that it is always the Palestinians, the Palestinian Authority, and now Hamas who are to blame for all hostilities and their consequences with the Israeli government.

The latest illustration of this Washington puppet show, backed by the most modern weapons and billions of taxpayer dollars annually sent to Israel, was the grotesquely one-sided Resolutions whisked through the Senate and the House of Representatives.

While a massive bombing and invasion of Gaza was underway, the resolution blaming Hamas for all the civilian casualties and devastation—99% of it inflicted on Palestinians—zoomed through the Senate by voice vote and through the House by a vote of 390 to 5 with 22 legislators voting present.

There is more dissent against this destruction of Gaza among the Israeli people, the Knesset, the Israeli media, and Jewish-Americans than among the dittoheads on Capitol Hill.

The reasons for such near-unanimous support for Israeli actions—no matter how often they are condemned by peace advocates such as Bishop Desmond Tutu, United Nations resolutions, the World Court and leading human rights groups inside and outside of Israel, are numerous. The pro-Israeli government lobby, and the right-wing Christian evangelicals, lubricated by campaign money of many Political Action Committees (PACs) certainly are key.

There is also more than a little bigotry in Congress against Arabs and Muslims, reinforced by the mass media yahoos who set new records for biased reporting each time this conflict erupts.

The bias is clear. It is always the Palestinians’ fault. Right-wingers who would never view the U.S. government as perfect see the Israeli government as never doing anything wrong. Liberals who do not hesitate to criticize the U.S. military view all Israeli military attacks, invasions and civilian devastation as heroic manifestations of Israeli defense.

The inversion of history and the scope of amnesia know no limits. What about the fact that the Israeli government drove Palestinians from their lands in 1947-48 with tens of thousands pushed into the Gaza strip. No problem to Congress.

Then the fact that the Israeli government cruelly occupied, in violation of UN resolutions, the West Bank and Gaza in 1967 and only removed its soldiers and colonists from Gaza (1.5 million people in a tiny area twice the size of the District of Columbia) in 2005. To Congress, the Palestinians deserved it.
Then when Hamas was freely elected to run Gaza, the Israeli authorities cut off the tax revenues on imports that belonged to the Gaza government. This threw the Gazans into a fiscal crisis—they were unable to pay their civil servants and police.

In 2006, the Israelis added to their unrelieved control of air, water and land around the open-air prison by establishing a blockade. The natives became restless. Under international law, a blockade is an act of war. Primitive rockets, called by reporters “wildly inaccurate” were fired into Israel. During this same period, Israeli soldiers and artillery and missiles would go into Gaza at will and take far more lives and cause far more injuries than those incurred by those rockets. Civilians—especially children, the infirm and elderly—died or suffered week after week for lack of medicines, medical equipment, food, electricity, fuel and water which were embargoed by the Israelis.

Then the Israeli bombing followed by the invasion during the past three weeks with what prominent Israeli writer Gideon Levy called “a brutal and violent operation…far beyond what was needed for protecting the people in its south.” Mr. Levy observed what the president of the United Nations General Assembly, Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann called a war against “a helpless and defenseless imprisoned population.”

The horror of being trapped from fleeing the torrent of the most modern weapons of war from the land, air and seas is reflected in this passage from Amira Hass, writing in the leading Israeli newspaper Haaretz:

“The earth shaking under your feet, clouds of choking smoke, explosions like a fireworks display, bombs bursting into all-consuming flames that cannot be extinguished with water, mushroom clouds of pinkish-red smoke, suffocating gas, harsh burns on the skin, extraordinary maimed live and dead bodies.”

Ms. Hass is pointing to the use of new anti-civilian weapons used on the Gazan people. So far there have been over 1100 fatalities, many thousands of injuries and the destruction of homes, schools, mosques, hospitals, pharmacies, granaries, farmer’s fields and many critical public facilities. The clearly marked UN headquarters and UN school were smashed, along with stored medicines and food supplies.

Why? The Congressional response: “Hamas terrorists” everywhere. Sure, defending their Palestinian families is called terrorism. The truth is there is no Hamas army, airforce and navy up against the fourth most powerful military in the world. As one Israeli gunner on an armored personnel carrier frankly said to The New York Times: “They are villagers with guns. They don’t even aim when they shoot.”

Injured Gazans are dying in damaged hospital corridors, bleeding to death because rescuers are not permitted to reach them or are endangered themselves. Thousands of units of blood donated by Jordanians are stopped by the Israeli blockade. Israel has kept the international press out of the Gazan killing fields.
What is going on in Gaza is what Bill Moyers called it earlier this month – “state terrorism.” Already about 400 children are known to have died. More will be added who are under the rubble.

Since 2002, more than 50 Arab and Muslim nations have had a standing offer, repeated often, that if Israel obeys several UN resolutions and withdraws to the 1967 borders leaving 22 percent of the original Palestine for an independent Palestinian state, they will open full diplomatic relations and there will be peace. Israel has declined to accept this offer.

None of these and many other aspects of this conflict matter to the Congress. Its members do not want to hear even from the Israeli peace movement, composed of retired generals, security chiefs, mayors, former government ministers, and members of the Knesset. In 60 years these savvy peace advocates have not been able to give one hour of testimony before a Congressional Committee.

Maybe members of Congress may wish to weigh the words of the founder of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, years ago when he said:

“There has been anti-Semitism the Nazis Hitler Auschwitz but was that their [the Palestinian’s] fault? They only see one thing: We have come here and stolen their country.”

Doesn’t that observation invite some compassion for the Palestinian people and their right to be free of Israeli occupation, land and water grabs and blockades in the 22 percent left of Palestine?

Some talking points (submitted by ADC) plus a letter by a concerned
citizen, Jules Rabin, submitted to her local paper, with great talking
points

1) The Israeli strikes, which started on December 27th, come after
several weeks of a tight Israeli blockade which left many of Gaza's
1.5-million inhabitants without sufficient food, water, fuel, or
medicine.

2) As of December 30th, the United Nations indicates that the
Israeli air strikes over the past three days have killed 375 people,
including 63 civilians, in Gaza and have left over 1,650 more injured,
almost 300 of which are in critical condition. The UN estimates that
5% of those killed are children under the age of 18.

3) The population of Gaza is 2/3 refugee and more than half are
under the age of 16. The UN has listed Gaza as the most densely
populated area in the world with a population density that is higher
than that of Manhattan in New York City.

4) Israel has a responsibility as the occupying force under
international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and
the laws of war to avoid harm of civilians in Gaza.

5) Israel's actions with the tight blockade on the 1.5-million
people in Gaza is a violation of those laws.

6) Israeli's attacks on Gaza, thus far resulting in the death of
over 375 people, including over 62 women and children, and injuries to
1,650 more people, calls for an immediate investigation by the United
Nations and objective review by the International Committee of the Red
Cross.

7) The timing of the strikes calls into question Israel's political
motivation as this comes in the final days of a lame-duck US
Administration and one-month before a hotly-contested Israeli election
in which the challenger is attacking the incumbent for being "soft" on
security.

8) It is time for the US to take its proper role as an honest broker
in the conflict and to live up to its promise as a champion of
freedom, liberty, and justice.

9) An immediate cessation of hostilities on all sides and a complete
end to the blockade is the only way to reinstate a cease-fire
agreement that will ensure the security of both Israelis and
Palestinians.

10) The mainstream media in the US has thus far miserably failed in
its news coverage of the humanitarian tragedy taking place in Gaza.
Media outlets should recall the disproportion, context of occupation,
and siege when mentioning the indiscriminate rocket attacks by Hamas
on southern Israel.

Situation before the strikes:

Cease-Fire from June to December: During the cease-fire brokered by
Egypt in June 2008, rocket attacks by Hamas extremists had greatly
diminished. The blockade of Gaza was relaxed slightly by Israel;
however, it never ended completely.

November: Israel escalated the situation in early November by killing
4 Palestinians in Gaza; claiming they were involved in weapons
smuggling, in the bloodiest violation of the cease-fire during the
Egyptian-brokered agreement. This resulted in renewed rocket attacks
by Hamas thus resulting in the crippling tight blockade by Israel on
the 1.5-million people in Gaza.

December: The siege of Gaza continued to suffocate the population with
renewed Hamas rocket attacks against southern Israel.

Impact of these strikes on the security of Israel:

The disproportionate nature of the Israeli strikes furthers the
humanitarian disaster, and represents a collective punishment of the
population of Gaza, which will not likely lead to security for
Israelis. Multiple studies indicate that similar attacks in the past
have failed to make Israeli citizens any safer and resulted in
increased support of Hamas extremists.

Final Thought:

Throughout the history of Arab-Israeli peace negotiations only
cease-fires and agreements have brought peace and security for both
Arabs and Israelis.

*GAZA ON MY MIND*

When a certain Rabbi Perin said, in a funeral eulogy for an American-
born
Israeli who had been beaten to death by a Palestinian mob, "A million
Arabs
are not worth one Jewish fingernail," the world was shocked and the
Israeli
Prime Minister himself denounced the statement. The murdered Israeli was
Baruch Goldstein, who on February 28, 1994, had stepped into a mosque
carrying an assault rifle, and killed 29 Palestinian men and boys
before his
gun jammed. He was then beaten to death by surviving worshipers.

Now in Gaza, a more modest version of the stunning ratio suggested by
Rabbi
Perin, the million and the one, is being enacted. The tally so far in
the
mutual killing taking place in and around Gaza is 380 Palestinians
dead and
6 Israelis dead. The dead Palestinians include 5 sisters of one
family, ages
4 to 17, and two sisters of another family, ages 5 and 12.

The 6 Israelis were victims of the crude home-made rockets with
notoriously
wild aim that this week have been fired every day from Gaza into nearby
Israeli communities: to teach Israel a lesson for its misdeeds. Such
indiscriminate attacks on civilian communities are prohibited by
international law (Article 33, Fourth Geneva Convention).

Israel's retaliatory bombing of Gaza, one of the most crowded places on
earth, has produced fatalities 65 times greater, including children and
non-combatants, and was likewise intended "to teach a lesson." Such
bombing
attacks are also a violation of Article 33 of the Geneva Convention,
notwithstanding Israel's claim that it targets only "the bad guys."

When the Hamas government of Gaza declared on December 24 that it would
withdraw from the cease fire it had agreed to, it could cite two
justifications. The first was the continuation of Israel's iron
blockade of
already impoverished Gaza, which deprived it of even the minimum of
supplies
necessary for health and survival. Israel had, secondly, itself broken
the
mutual cease fire on November 4, fifty days before Hamas formally
declared
an end to its observation of it, when Israeli troops broke into Gaza,
killing six Palestinians and carting off six others.

The continuing blockade of Gaza, which is itself a grave violation of
the
rules of war concerning collective punishment, has had devastating
consequences for the 1 ½ million people who live there - most of them
refugees from the '67 war and their descendants. The shortages of food,
medical supplies, and fuel for electricity (for, among other things,
providing water and pumping away sewage), has produced incalculable
suffering. 75% of Gazans are currently malnourished. The children of
Gaza,
who number 58% of the population, have been the greatest sufferers
under the
blockade: 46% suffer from acute anemia, 45% have an iron deficiency,
and 18%
have been stunted in their growth. .

Under the blockade, the people of Gaza were reduced to destitution.
Under
the heavy bombardments of this week, terror from the sky has been
added to
the months-long physical privation they have been enduring.

So will the people of Gaza and the Hamas government that they elected
now
"learn the lesson" that Israel seeks to teach them?

So far, not. Neither side wants to understand the "lesson" the other
side is
teaching.

Gaza, locked down, sealed in, half-starved, terrified, and overpowered
as it
is now, is acquiring an eery resemblance to the Warsaw Ghetto of the
1940's:
a resemblance still faint, but developing.

Titus North, an American professor of political science, wrote just the
other day, in connection with the current bombing of Gaza, "A state
founded
by Holocaust survivors should be a beacon of morality, not a black
hole for
it."

The terrible loop that history has taken - descendants of the historic
victims of the Holocaust now wearing the jackboots of the dominant
warrior -
is a painful thing to contemplate.

Over thirty years ago, a book came out titled "How the Government Breaks the Law, by Jethro K. Lieberman." Even then it was old news and the examples cited seemed small compared to today's chronic law-breakers in the White House and at many federal departments and agencies. Many recent books have been written on the expansive outlaw behavior of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

The Executive has devoted less attention to the explosion of unauthorized actions in recent years. What should be the most frequent question by reporters to government officials -- namely, “By what authority are you acting?” – is the rarest of inquiries.

A two part series on Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. in the Washington Post by David
Cho in late November brought this point out in a stunningly frank admission by the corporate bailout czar himself.

Speaking of the takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as other mega seizures of failing Wall Street firms, Mr. Paulson expressed these anarchic words: "Even if you don't have the authorities – and frankly I didn't have the authorities for anything – if you take charge, people will follow."

Whew! There you have it! He becomes the law and the law is what he says it is because no one – neither a rubber-stamping President, nor a supine Congress, nor any citizen, deprived of any standing to sue, is going or can do anything about it.

Reporter Cho goes on to write: "Senior government officials said Paulson helped craft rescue programs for financial firms, though he was not sure he had an unquestionable legal basis for the initiatives including the bailouts of the failing investment bank Bear Stearns in March and the
wounded insurance giant American International Group (AIG) in September."

Mr. Paulson went further. Playing Congress, he backed the Federal Reserve – already a government within a government funded by banks– to unprecedented unilateral expansion of its powers and its self-made assets. The Post reported that officials from the Treasury and the Fed “never knew whether they had the legal authority to interfere with the market for such derivatives but did so anyway because the opaque trading threatened the wider financial system."

Unauthorized Executive Branch actions tend to be contagious. Noticing that the crisis left Wall
Street on its knees and willing to unilaterally assume over $8 trillion in a variety of loan, subsidy and capital obligations, the Bush regime kept making more of its powers all by itself. Why not, they may have been thinking? Look what they've gotten away with in the areas of military and
foreign policy actions.

Weekend gigantic corporate bailouts – a more recent one being the $300 billion plus assumption of Citigroup's financial risks – engineered by Citigroup co-boss, Robert Rubin--were very secret affairs.

The more public grab of power was the $700 billion goliath to rescue the casino capitalists on Wall Street which was submitted in only 3 ½ pages of proposed legislation to Congress by Paulson and Ben Bernake, the Fed's chairman in September.

This was too much for the ideologies of House Republicans who beat it on the first round. Even the spineless Democrats thought the requested authority was too much of a blank check. So what happened? Bush told Paulson to give various members of Congress "sweeteners" such as pork
and tax breaks for favored lobbyists to get the required votes. Consequently, Paulson was granted staggering discretion to spend the $700 billion when, where and to whom he wanted under whatever conditions or no conditions at all. All in the name of socialism saving capitalism from massive collapse. Ironic.

Mr. Paulson came away from Capitol Hill with Congress in his hip pocket – not exactly what the framers of our Constitution had in mind in 1787.

Thus embolden, Paulson initiated a unilateral, administrative repeal of a Congressional enactment in the tax code – section 382 – to give the banks a huge windfall of about $140 billion. George K. Yin, former chief of staff of the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation,
rejected the legality of the Treasury Department's decision. He told the Post: "I think almost
every tax expert would agree that the answer is no. They basically repealed a 22-year-old law
that Congress passed [and Reagan signed] as a backdoor way of providing aid to banks."

Section 382 of the Tax code “sharply restricts a company from using the tax losses of a company
it acquires to reduce its own tax liability," according to the respected Citizens for Tax Justice.
The Treasury's two-page notice generated a brief specialized display of outrage from members of
the Tax writing committees in Congress and a hundred national, state and local organizations
signed a joint letter to Congress demanding the legislators reverse the Treasury’ unauthorized
edict.

So what did the House of Representatives do? It passed, later rejected by the Senate a provision
in the auto bailout bill, a provision that would have extended the unauthorized Treasury ruling
to the automobile industry!

What is going on here is a revolutionary coup d-etat of our legal system by executive branch
diktats.

Is the organized legal profession through their bar associations in challenge mode? Are law
professors churning over this mockery of the legislature and executive branch administrative
law? Are conservative groups – always upset about judicial activism – going into high gear
against the new monarchy in and around the White House in downtown Washington, D.C.? Are
all those futurists worried enough about the trillions of debt dollars being piled on our children
and grandchildren to protest and act? Not really.

Obviously, all this is a developing story. Stay tuned, unless you are willing to be turned out.

Dear George W. Bush---

Cong. Barney Frank said recently that Barack Obama’s declaration that “there is only one president at a time” over-estimated the number. He was referring to the economic crisis. But where are you on the Gaza crisis where the civilian population of Gaza, its civil servants and public facilities are being massacred and destroyed respectively by U.S built F-16s and U.S. built helicopter gunships.

The deliberate suspension of your power to stop this terrorizing of 1.5 million people, mostly refugees, blockaded for months by air, sea and land in their tiny slice of land, is in cowardly contrast to the position taken by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. That year he single handedly stopped the British, French and Israeli aircraft attack against Egypt during the Suez Canal dispute.

Fatalities in Gaza are already over 400 and injuries close to 2000 so far as is known. Total Palestinian civilian casualties are 400 times greater then the casualties incurred by Israelis. But why should anyone be surprised at your blanket support for Israel’s attack given what you have done to a far greater number of civilians in Iraq and now in Afghanistan?

Confirmed visual reports show that Israeli warplanes and warships have destroyed or severely damaged police stations, homes, hospitals, pharmacies, mosques, fishing boats, and a range of public facilities providing electricity and other necessities.

Why should this trouble you at all? It violates international law, including the Geneva Conventions and the UN Charter. You too have repeatedly violated international law and committed serious constitutional transgressions.

Then there is the matter of the Israeli government blocking imports of critical medicines, equipment such as dialysis machines, fuel, food, water, spare parts and electricity at varying intensities for almost two years. The depleted UN aid mission there has called this illegal blockade a humanitarian crisis especially devastating to children, the aged and the infirm. Chronic malnutrition among children is rising rapidly. UN rations support eighty percent of this impoverished population.

How do these incontrovertible facts affect you? Do you have any empathy or what you have called Christian charity?

What would a vastly shrunken Texas turned in an encircled Gulag do up against the 4th most powerful military in the world? Would these embattled Texans be spending their time chopping wood?

Gideon Levy, the veteran Israeli columnist for Ha’aretz, called the Israeli attack a “brutal and violent operation” far beyond what was needed for protecting the people in its south. He added: “The diplomatic efforts were just in the beginning, and I believe we could have got to a new truce without this bloodshed…..to send dozens of jets to bomb a total helpless civilian society with hundreds of bombs—just today, they were burying five sisters. I mean, this is unheard of. This cannot go on like this. And this has nothing to do with self-defense or with retaliation even. It went out of proportion, exactly like two-and-a-half years ago in Lebanon.”

Apparently, thousands of Israelis, including some army reservists, who have demonstrated against this destruction of Gaza agree with Mr. Levy. However, their courageous stands have not reached the mass media in the U.S. whose own reporters cannot even get into Gaza due to Israeli prohibitions on the international press.

Your spokespeople are making much ado about the breaking of the six month truce. Who is the occupier? Who is the most powerful military force? Who controls and blocks the necessities of life? Who has sent raiding missions across the border most often? Who has sent artillery shells and missiles at close range into populated areas? Who has refused the repeated comprehensive peace offerings of the Arab countries issued in 2002 if Israel would agree to return to the 1967 borders and agree to the creation of a small independent Palestinian state possessing just twenty two percent of the original Palestine?

The “wildly inaccurate rockets”, as reporters describe them, coming from Hamas and other groups cannot compare with the modern precision armaments and human damage generated from the Israeli side.

There are no rockets coming from the West Bank into Israel. Yet the Israeli government is still sending raiders into that essentially occupied territory, still further entrenching its colonial outposts, still taking water and land and increasing the checkpoints This is going on despite a most amenable West Bank leader, Mahmoud Abbas, whom you have met with at the White House and praised repeatedly. Is it all vague words and no real initiatives with you and your emissary Condoleezza Rice?

Peace was possible, but you provided no leadership, preferring instead to comply with all wishes and demands by the Israeli government—even resupplying it with the still active cluster bombs in south Lebanon during the invasion of that country in 2006.

The arguments about who started the latest hostilities go on and on with Israel always blaming the Palestinians to justify all kinds of violence and harsh treatment against innocent civilians.

From the Palestinian standpoint, you would do well to remember the origins of this conflict which was the dispossession of their lands. To afford you some empathy, recall the oft-quoted comment by the founder of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, who told the Zionist leader, Nahum Goldmann:

“There has been anti-Semitism the Nazis Hitler Auschwitz but was that their [the Palestinians] fault? They only see one thing: We have come here and stolen their country. Why should they accept that?”
Alfred North Whitehead once said: “Duty arises out of the power to alter the course of events.” By that standard, you have shirked mightily your duty over the past eight years to bring peace to both Palestinians and Israelis and more security to a good part of the world.

The least you can do in your remaining days at the White House is adopt a modest profile in courage, and vigorously demand and secure a ceasefire and a solidly based truce. Then your successor, President-elect Obama can inherit something more than the usual self-censoring Washington puppet show that eschews a proper focus on the national interests of the United States.

President Bush was welcomed with the tossed shoes in Baghdad. That was the traditional way of welcoming war criminals. Every Iraqi family has lost at least a loved one or two of their family members since democracy-loving Bush lied about the WMD to invade their country in 2003. Bush not only destroyed the Iraqi infrastructure but also destroyed several towns with all of its inhabitants. Including men, women, old, young, and children. More than a million Iraqi civilians perished since the illegal invasion of that Muslim country. Bush was belittled in his worldly life and will find the punishment he deserves awaiting him when he stands in front on Allah in the Judgment Day where everybody will be looking after himself in that serious fearful day. I do not believe that there is any Iraqi who hates President Bush. Bush is the guy who had to lie about the existance of WMD in order to demecratize Iraq and even if the price was the killing of a million Iraqis and the destruction of their country's infrastructure as well as several of their towns.

What we saw in Baghdad was

A disorderly return of merchandise. The Iraqi Journalist has bought a pair of American shoes that didn’t fit him well. He was unhappy with it. He tried to return it but the company told him sorry we can’t return any merchandise due to the economic crises. Demand the production of safer vehicles before giving the money to Killer auto makers who kill 43,000 and injure three million Americans EVERY YEAR.

Now is the time to mandate the production of safer vehicles, by surrounding vehicles with rubber, all bumpers on same level made of honeycomb Neoprene rubber with shock absorbers. Hillary's ties to lobbyists cannot be severed. Status quo is responsible for the dilemma we are in now. Hillary cannot be part of the coming Administration specially Secretary of State while she has strong ties with lobbyists who have financed her failed campaign. The debt she has is the Status Quo debt. Americans who voted for change have nothing to do with it. Hillary will be willing to sell American's interests to the same lobbyists; she has ties with for years. Lobbyists are promoting her to carry out the lobbyist’s agenda and serve their interests using American foreign policy. Barack Obama has to wise up and stay away from those lobbyists. Obama was elected to serve the interest of America not that of the lobbyists. The past failing foreign policy has endangered Americans life abroad. We did it!

Thank God, Americans have elected a lion from the Capitol to guard People’s House.

Now we need payers and asking God for guidance and blessings. As a Good start President elect Obama should invite religious leaders of Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths to pray for God’s blessings of People’s House. Alternate painting the front columns of the White House black and white making the notion that the People’s House belongs to all citizens black and white.
