Across the state Mainers are saying they're ready for change: by turning out in record numbers, stopping by their town clerk's and casting their ballots early.
Marcia writes:
My four year old granddaughter, Zeta, is a definite politician in the making, and she may be the youngest Obama supporter. She lives in North Carolina, although both of her parents are from Maine. The other day her parents went to vote early. As they got done, the first thing Zeta asked them was, "So, did you vote for Obama?" (They did, of course!)
Whether you're voting for you, for your children, for your grandchildren, for whomever, make sure you get to the polls and let your voice be heard.

Ronnie Cho, Maine's Campaign for Change Field Director, sent this message out this morning:
John McCain is making a final push for Maine—and he's committed to a negative campaign designed to distort Barack's record with false attacks. That means now is the time to fight back by making this the biggest get out the vote effort in Maine history. We need to prove that what we've built is real and can deliver the change America needs. Together, we've talked with thousands of undecided Mainers and organized our communities to make real change happen. But all of this work means nothing if we don't get people out to vote. Sign up today to talk with voters and help Barack bring the change we need. We have the chance to make history here in Maine. This is your opportunity to be a part of it—our plan won't work without you. What you do—or don't do—in the next week will decide the outcome of this race. If you agree that we can't afford four more years of George Bush's failed policies and politics, now is the time to stand up and demand change. Sign up and do your part to bring this campaign across the finish line: http://me.barackobama.com/gotvme We've worked too hard to let this slip through our fingers—it's time to put this country back on track. Thanks, Ronnie

[Obama’s] health care plan, his proposal to cut taxes for the middle class while raising them on the wealthy and his desire to better regulate the financial markets all point in the right direction. Just as important as his thoughtful positions on the issues, however, are the temperament and leadership qualities that Obama displayed in recent weeks. And as the pressure built and the stakes grew, Obama remained calm. McCain has talked a lot about his reputation as a maverick, but has veered little from his party's orthodoxy. His embracing of President Bush's tax cuts, which McCain once opposed out of concern for raising the budget deficit, is an example. A long and hard-fought campaign has shown that inspirational leader to be Barack Obama. To read the full endorsement, click here.
America is hungry for a person who can restore our faith and confidence—in ourselves, in our politics, in our country. We believe that Sen. Barack Obama is that person, and we endorse him for president. As McCain grew more angry and desperate, Obama grew more calm and measured. Obama has not sought to appeal to voters' anger and resentment, but to their desire to come together in common purpose. Obama has shown a remarkably open intellect throughout the campaign, and a capacity to cut through hidebound thinking to the root cause of problems. His positions emerge after analysis across a broad historical context. It will take extraordinary powers of leadership to return this country to its promise. We believe Barack Obama has those powers and is the man to do it. To read the full endorsement, click here.

Senator George Mitchell just sent the following email:
The second most common reason that people don't vote is because they don't know how. The top reason: No one asks them to. Barack Obama needs you to ask your fellow Mainers to vote. In these final two weeks before Election Day, November 4th, we're planning the largest get out the vote (GOTV) operation in Maine's history. But it'll only happen if you're a part of it. The conversations you have with friends, family, and voters across Maine right now will make a real difference in whether they stay home or make their voices heard on November 4th. Sign up now to become a part of this historic effort in the days leading up to November 4th. We have to make sure every voter hears about the kind of change Barack will deliver for Maine families. What we do or don't do in the next two weeks will decide the outcome of this race. Imagine how you'll feel if you wake up on November 5th—facing four more years of the same Bush-McCain economic policies—and realize that you didn't do all you could to make sure Barack Obama is the next president. I know that's not a feeling I could live with. My father was a janitor at Colby College and my mother worked in a textile mill after she immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 18. They worked hard to build a life for themselves, and for me. We need to make sure the next generation has the same opportunities we had. In this election, we have a chance to reclaim the American dream. If we don't come together and work to bring about the change we need, it won't happen. We need you to volunteer to get out the vote between now and Election Day and help change the course of history: http://me.barackobama.com/gotvme Thanks, Senator George Mitchell

Small Business Owners from across the state came out in support the Obama-Biden ticket today, citing their plan to help small businesses and start-up companies by improving access to capital, cutting health care costs, and investing in innovation and development.
“Barack Obama’s plan will cut taxes for small business and help employers provide health care for employees, gain critical access to capital, and create more jobs,” said Suzanne Kelly, Chair of Maine Small Business Owners for Obama. “The current financial crisis is making it hard for Maine small businesses to make payroll and keep up with rising costs. Obama’s plan will free up credit and encourage investment in small businesses and startups so that Maine companies can continue to grow and create good jobs that cannot be outsourced.”
Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s Plan for Small Businesses would provide tax credits, expand loan programs, lower health care costs, and promote rural small business growth.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden also recently proposed a Small Business Emergency Rescue Plan to increase credit for small businesses and help encourage job creation amid the financial crisis.

This weekend, students from across the state gathered at the Bangor Campaign for Change Office before heading out to canvass the local community.

Young people are playing an important role in the campaign, registering voters, holding Early Vote drives, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and talking to friends, parents, and grandparents about why they believe this year’s Democratic candidates are the best choice for their future.
The Campus Coalition for Change will be organizing on campuses throughout the state.

The Bangor Daily News announced its endorsement of Barack Obama for President today, citing the Senator's unique ability to unify America, rebuild the economy, and make real change happen for Maine:
…change is what this country needs...Barack Obama represents that change. With a record number of Americans believing the country is on the wrong track, strong leadership and a commitment to moving in a new direction are needed. Backing hope and unity ensures that Maine remains focused on the future, where a return to the country's positive prospects lies. He also understands that drilling for oil without conservation and support for renewable energy won't move the U.S. toward energy independence. He understands that reducing taxes and health care costs for the middle class and small businesses are essential to rebuilding the economy. For these reasons, the policies of the Barack Obama and Joe Biden ticket and its serious focus on our most pressing issues will better serve Maine and America.
The Brunswick Times Record endorsed Barack Obama for President today, citing his innovative plans to provide health care for all, achieve energy independence, and strengthen the economy:
Obama's action plan for addressing the critical issues that the 44th U.S. president will encounter on Jan. 21, 2009, offers more depth and innovation… … Obama has advocated significant investment in wind, solar and other "clean" alternative energy sources as a way of creating jobs, minimizing human impact on climate change and reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Obama's [health care] plan focuses on better oversight of insurers, which is long overdue; more aggressive cost containment; and better access to preventive medicine. Obama's personal history and deep knowledge of world history make him far more likely to strengthen frayed alliances…. Obama will serve our children better.
