Yesterday I attended a Town Hall Meeting in Farmingville Long Island. The event started at 6.30pm but with several members of OFA we arrived at 3.00pm. This is Long Island, people ! Hard Republicans to the core and who disrupted the previous meeting in Setauket so badly that police had to be called and Congressman Tim Bishop had to be escorted home.
The event well better than expected, so to speak. There were more than 350 people in attendance. We were prepared and we took our seats early with our signs ready. The rednecks arrived later making as much noise as they could with the usual signs warning of impending doomsday if health care reform was passed. Just think that when our democratic congressman called for a minute of silence to honor Ted Kennedy they booed loudly and screaming insults ! At some point during the meeting they even sent a 12 year-old kid to the microphone to plead with the audience "please don't pull the plug on my grand'Ma". Nevertheless Bishop was forceful and answered all questions with calm and expertise. I came home practically deaf but with a sense of accomplished duty.
Having been born and raised in France (ranking #1 by the WHO) this whole circus about health care reform in this country still baffles me ...
This day is not coming one day too soon. My husband is now talking in his sleep and mumbling ("seven point two") after spending most of his day stuck to the polls. Since the beginning of this campaign we both have been ardent supporters. We donated, spread the word, canvassed houses in Pottstown PA, registered voters in New York City, called many states, wrote articles in French newspapers, and anguished at every primary. But tomorrow we will win and it will be the beginning of a new day, the future we have been waiting for for so long. I am proud to witness this historic moment. And we are booking our tickets for January 20. Washington DC here we come !
I just come back from Pottstown where my husband and I volunteered from 9/226 to 9/29. We canvassed about 100 houses on Saturday and Sunday and converted a few undecided voters. Many thanks to Chris and Ann at the Obama headquarters on High Street for their help and their efforts in this campaign. It was an eye opener and an amazing experience for me. Born and raised in France, and living on Long Island I have not had a chance to see another side of this great country.
Montgomery County has a lot of undecided voters and need help. I highly recommend the trip !
Here is a fairly detailed account :

According to the French newspaper Le Figaro (8/5/08) Walmart is doing its best to undermine Obama's campaign and organizing "compulsory meetings" of its employees to warn them against voting for Obama. Apparently Walmart is afraid that under the presidency of Obama its employees could finally have a union.
One thing is clear : Let's boycott Walmart immediately if you have not already done so !!
Hillary's website has a T-shirt contest ! Absolutely essential indeed at this stage of the race. This is Robert's entry:

I am really dumbfounded by the level of hate the Clinton supporters (mostly women) have against Barack. Witness Geraldine Ferraro or the attention paid to the "sweetie" remark (!). Is it just because HRC was "entitled" to the nomination in their eyes ? Or because they hate men ? Or because they also happen to be racists deep in their subconscious ? One woman whom I called last night in Kentucky was polite with me but firm "Sorry but I vote for women". In fact they refuse to recognize the fact that racism is much more prevalent in this country than sexism and therefore cling to an essentialist position.
Strangely the "Obamanots" as some proudly call themselves on the CNN blog claim that are ready to vote for McCain who is certainly not an enlightened feminist (and who would overturn roe vs Wade). Could it be that some of them are also jealous of all the young people who support Barack, realizing that in some way their time has passed ?
