Rubin or Stiglitz, Does It Matter?

It would be presumptuous to speculate on who might be Barack's chief economic advisor, but it is not too early to do so. Now that George Bush has embraced Keynesian economics, you might think that the era of Reaganomics is finally dead. Well, John McCain and his sidekick Sarah, are intent on resurrecting that vampire. Few realize that the similarity is more than casual since Vlad the Impaler had also been considered a heroic defender of his country and had spent a sizable part of his life as a prisoner. What we need is the modern Matthias Corvinus.
The similarities abound, but I digress. The question is whether we will wander in the direction Bill Clinton followed with Robert Rubin, or whether we might choose an alternative. Heaven knows, it doesn't take much to realize that we all don't share the same information. I think history will lament that Sarbanes-Oxley(SOX) was a huge waste of effort at doing the impossible; interfering with people's favorite pastime of deceiving their neighbors.
The real question is how economically conservative is Barack Obama. Is he really as conservative as Warren Buffett and Paul Volker or is he just too circumspect to let on that he is open to new ideas like Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz. Stiglitz is not alone with his ideas. Even conservative like Kevin Phillips have similar views. The only difference is the question of how markets really work and how to go about setting up the rules without making them Byzantine and onerous.

John McCain is not an evil man, he is just what he looks like. An angry hateful man who has a score to settle and he doesn't much care who gets hurt in the process of settling it. Just like George Bush wanted to teach Saddam Hussain not to try and assassinate his father. You may not be Bush, but explain to me what exactly is the difference? Plausible deniability, I live it.

You would think that John McCain's handlers would have been aware that they should have used almost any other blue collar profession, like .... Well yes, blue collar profession is an oxymoron, but.... Ok, I will admit that our society has become so commoditized that we as consumers have little sympathy for those who provide us all the things on which we have come to depend. But getting back to plumbers, hasn't 'Moonstruck' become so iconic that plumber is synonymous with sleazy unscrupulous self-indulgent scum?
Maybe someone in the campaign should give John and Sarah snowboards and a weekend pass to Aspen so they can recharge for the final campaign push.

That Woman!!!?

I was taken aback by a woman I spoke with recently while doing phone banking. As is common in battleground states, some people adamantly refuse to say who they support. Since we identify ourselves as being from the OBAMA CAMPAIGN, it is safe to assume they do not support Barack. This woman did NOT want to talk about who she was supporting. And then added after a short pause, “..,. and I can't STAND that woman!”
I was speechless. I wasn't sure who she was referring to. And then she added, “She is TOTALLY UNQUALIFIED! I can't vote for her.” Yes, she was even refusing to say the 'evil' words Sara Palin.

Barack Missed This One

There is a rule in the IRS code which PENALIZES taxpayers for not liquidating part of their IRA or 401k.The penalty is pretty stiff. So much so, that you are better off taking the loss than paying the penalty. The number of people affected is small, but they ALL VOTE! They are turning 71 next year. For me, that is only 6 years away.
The real problem is two fold. One, it will REQUIRE people to sell stock into a soft market. Two, the amount which will be added to income will be smaller than otherwise and thus there will be a real loss in tax revenue. This would be like with the bank bailout where the government would be forced to sell under-performing assets in say six years and thus take a forced loss rather than waiting say twelve or fifteen years and breaking even or even making a profit.
The real problem, though, is that in four years if not addressed, this will become a real issue.

Palin cut taxes?

Gov Palin said, "As mayor, every year I was in office, I did reduce taxes. I eliminated personal property taxes and eliminated small business inventory taxes. And as governor, we suspended our state fuel tax,"
But Cnn says, “But she also raised sales taxes by one-quarter — from 2 percent to 2.5 percent — to finance a $14.7 million sports complex that remains in the red.”
According to an Anchorage Daily News article originally published in March 2002, “Mayor Sarah Palin, who supported the measure, said the tight vote will motivate city officials to keep a close eye on the budget for the center.”
One thing is clear, Gov Palin is no magician. She can't give people something for nothing. Instead she left Wasilla with a white elephant and one of the most regressive taxes ever invented to pay for it.

Russia might be 'next door' to Alaska,
But Vladimir Putin would have to travel nearly 4,000 miles to get to that door.
You see, he lives on the other side of the continent.
It is only 1,000 miles from Moscow to Berlin,
about the distance from Anchorage to the Alaska Russia border.
