Iowa County Conventions

Learn more about your County Convention:
1. I attended my precinct caucus but wasn’t elected as a delegate. How can I help Barack Obama at the County Conventions?
If you are an alternate you may attend. This means that if a delegate doesn’t show up you may be able to fill their spot.
2. What if I am a delegate and cannot attend?
If you are a delegate and unable to attend, it is important to select an alternate in order for Senator Obama to be counted. If you need assistance, we can identify one for you. Please work with your our field organizer or delegate chair if you need assistance in identifying that person. You seat that person by filling out their name in the convention information you receive from the county party.
3. There is a registration fee associated with my convention, and I can’t afford that. Am I unable to attend?
The registration fees are OPTIONAL. Each county has to cover the costs of their convention so they ask for donations to help. You are free to give what you can, but do not have to give anything to participate.
4. I can’t find any early registration for my county. Am I missing something?
Not all counties have early registration. You can find out if your county has early registration by clicking on your county on the map above. If you do not have early registration, we encourage you to arrive right when registration opens.
5. I want to help get other Obama supporters to the convention. How can I help?
Please email iowa@barackobama.com with your county and precinct number if you know it and we will help you make phone calls to other delegates and alternates.
6. I would like to be a delegate to the district and state conventions. What is the process?
Once the preference groups are counted at your county convention, each group is given the number of delegates and alternates that they are entitled to send to the district and state conventions. These delegates will be elected within your preference group. In order to be a delegate you must plan on attending two conventions:
April 26th—District Conventions in 5 Congressional Districts in Iowa
June 14th—Democratic State Convention in Des Moines
7. How can I become a delegate in Denver?
We strongly recommend you visit the IDP website at www.iowademocrats.org and view the official document 2008 delegate plan. We have 56 and 8 alternates who attend the DNC convention in August. There are two ways.
- Attend the county convention. Be elected to serve as a delegate to the district/state convention. Run for delegate at the district convention. At district convention the following will be chosen:
District Level Delegates: 29
Alternates: 5
District 1: 3 male, 3 female
District 2: 4 male,3 female
District 3: 3 male, 3 female
District 4: 3 male, 3 female
District 5: 2 male, 3 female
- Attend the county convention. Be elected to serve as a delegate to the district and state convention. Run for delegate at the state convention. These slots are a little trickier because you are competing with people across the state. At the state convention the following will be chosen:
Un-Pledged Add on Delegates: 1
Pledged PLEO (Party Leader Elected Official) Delegates: 6
At Large Delegates: 10
At Large Alternates: 3
Standing Committee Members: 2
